Historic Gardens Review Archive

Between 1995 and 2022 HISTORIC GARDENS REVIEW and its predecessor EUROPEAN GARDENS came out twice a year.

WHAT WAS IN THE REVIEW?

The magazine was designed to cover the whole field of historic parks, gardens and designed landscapes and to do so on an international basis. It was the only international journal which was designed to cater for all who had an interes in garden history: professional garden historians, landscape designeres, plantsmen, owners of historic gardens and the wider public. Neither drily academic nor populist, its lively and thought-provoking articles aimed to widen both knowledge and appreciation of our garden hieritage.
Its message was that every country has a garden heritage to celebrate and though the Review sometimes contained articles on famous historic gardens, it specialised in finding the out-of-the-way garden, often in a country that might not realise that it had a garden heritage.

All aspects were covered: the history of gardens and their creators, modern restorations and modern disasters, the challenges of maintaining and presenting gardens and the views and controversies of professionals and amateurs alike.
